How do I learn and practice Kung Fu?

We offer authentic Shaolin Kung Fu training adapted for the modern lifestyle. There are three age specific general classes with students of mixed ability and experience. Each class has a format that is suited to that age range, with training content appropriate for a mixed ability student base. Students will get a broad and varied training experience and the opportunity to challenge themselves.

What are the types of classes you offer?

All of our instructors are certified to teach children (7 – 12 years) and adult (13+) classes. Some centres will also provide pee wee classes (4 – 6years) which require a specialised instruction style.

All of our classes are group instructed which means that you have the opportunity to meet and train with other likeminded students. Your training partner can change up so that you get the benefit of practicing with a student of a different ability or experience level. Visit our class pages to find out more about class structure and content.

What can I expect to learn in a class?

We teach Shaolin Gaocan Mun Nam Pai Chuan Kung Fu, a traditional Chinese martial art rooted in Chinese culture. Like any other traditional martial art, we teach techniques suited for combat and self-defence while also placing emphasis on respect and tradition.

This means that our students don’t just improve their fitness and physical condition, but also their mental strength and discipline.

There are many opportunities for a student to improve by learning, practicing and sharing Shaolin Kung Fu. Read more in our classes page or the ‘Our Kung Fu’ section

Do you provide other classes?

We provide focused and specialised classes depending on the training centre. Some classes will be skill development or practice dependent such as our Sanda skills, sparring, chi-gung, or performance classes. If you are looking for something more specific get in touch with one of our Instructors to see what is available in your area.

We also offer advanced classes for more senior students as well as specific Black Belt classes. This is so that as you progress through the grades that you have specific focused classes for your experience level. The Junior grades before black belt provide a solid Kung Fu foundation, but as you approach black belt and beyond there is much more to learn.

Do you offer seminars and workshops?

Being a broad-based martial art, there is a lot that a student can choose to learn and practice. We hold several workshops and seminars throughout the year. These can be skill based such as Sanda, offensive and defensive sparring tactics, self-defence, chi gung, Chinese wrestling, or small joint manipulation. We also cover one of the many forms practiced by our Art including Black Crane, Southern Lohan Fist, Tiger Claw, Golden Palm, 18 Lohan and more.

From time to time we will also engage in workshops with our New Zealand Kung Fu Wushu Federation partners where we’ve done a combined Sanda skills session in Hamilton, learned some Wushu forms with NZ Wushu in Auckland or practiced with Shaolin cousins in Palmerston North.
